Vampires and Stem Cells - it all makes sense...

Posted by James Andrews on Tue, May 15, 2012 @ 09:30 AM

vampire stem cellsYes, it is true. Vampires are not after your blood. They are after your stem cells.

It really does make sense once you stop and think about it.

Poor Barnabas Collins and Edward Cullen have been portrayed in a negative light. It is not about the blood, tasty as it might be to werewolves, zombies and the like. It is about stem cells. Those power packing cells that can cleverly be anything they want to be. They are the building block of the human body so why would a vampire not want a piece of that action! Immortality in a gulp!

Let's look at this in a different way. Upon death (an obvious requirement if one is to be a vampire) the body stops regenerating. The cells stop working and tissue stops repairing itself. Organs will collapse and the brain shuts down. Everything is headed for that great big cupcake in the sky. Death. Then the magic happens and the person is transformed into a vampire. He or she has to keep the synapses firing in some manner and what better way than through stem cells?

Edward and the rest of the Cullen gang feasted on the blood of animals. That is perfectly acceptable because all multicellular organisms contain stem cells. Barnabas Collins preferred homo sapien as his entree and of course humans are walking/talking stem cell factories. The benefit of sucking down those stem cells is like chugging an energy drink. It awakened the regenerative process within their bodies. Their tissue began healing which in turn leads to immortality.

As mentioned previously, stem cells are nature's powerhouse. The equivalent in the tech world would be nanobots. Do you remember the television show The Six Million Dollar Man? The premise of the show was a man has an accident and then is rebuilt with technology. He is better, stronger and faster. Edward Cullen and Barnabas Collins were on to the human version of nanobots and technology long before the bionic man!

Let's address another facet of stem cells. Stem cells are versatile. When placed in a damaged area they can become like the other cells present. They are copy cats. If you place them in the spine they will become a spinal cell. One of the great myths of vampirism is the ability to shape change. Edward and Barnabas do not have this ability but who is to say that with enough stem cells they could not learn? It is entirely plausible.

Vampires have it rough! They can't go to the local drive thru and get a cup of stem cells... well at least not until they figure out that people are now banking stem cells from their extracted wisdom teeth and baby teeth (or any tooth extracted for braces etc.) and that those freezers probably aren't set up to fend off one of our fanged friends.

The next time you are held squeamish over a blood drinking vampire ponder about his or her poor fate. It really is not your blood they want. It is your stem cells. Give them the gift of immortality and share some of your banked stem cells today!
